Honduras is a country in Central America and located at the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

  • I traveled to Honduras on my world trip through Latin America:
    • 1. Shuttle from Antigua Guatemala (Guatemala) to Copán.
    • 2. Bus from Copán to San Pedro Sula and then a bus to La Ceiba. In order to catch the last ferry to Utila, we took the bus in Copán at 6 a.m. and arrived at the port of La Ceiba 1 hour before the ferry departure. The Copán to La Ceiba shuttle did not run because there were not enough people. Our alternative with the public buses was also significantly cheaper.
    • 3. Ferry from Utila to La Ceiba and by taxi from the ferry pier to the bus terminal. Bus from La Ceiba to San Pedro Sula. Since the buses to Guatemala only go in the morning, we stayed one night in San Pedro Sula.
    • 4. Bus from San Pedro Sula to Guatemala City.
  • I used for my planning and can recommend the Lonely Planet for Central America.

Impressions from my Vlog

  • Copán Ruins

In Central America were the two high cultures of the Mayas and Aztecs. The Mayan ruins of Copán are the remains of a past civilization of several thousand inhabitants. Compared to the other Mayan ruins, this one has many detailed statues. What we see today of temples and pyramids has been repeatedly overbuilt by new rulers. Archaeologists found a huge red temple with many stone decorations under the Copán Acropolis, which was still very well preserved.

  • Utila

The Bay Island are in the Caribbean Sea and consists of the two islands Utila and Roatan. Surrounded by the second largest reef in the world, they are a paradise for divers. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world to get your diving license because it is cheap and you can already see the reef during training. We chose Utila and did the diving certificates “PADI Open Water Diver” and “PADI Advanced Open Water Diver”.

Accommodation

Transport

  • Arrival
    • International bus companies like TicaBus run from the capitals of neighboring countries such as El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. There is a good overview on Rome2Rio.
    • There are shuttles between the typical travel destinations. These are small buses that take you door-to-door. They are faster, more convenient and safer than public transportation. Especially on long journeys, they are no more expensive than public transport, because you save unnecessary overnight stays. We had the following shuttles:
      • From Antigua Guatemala (Guatemala) to Copán.
  • Between the cities
    • The public buses were outdated coaches, where we could load our large travel backpacks into the bus below. We were amazed because in the neighboring countries of El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala were only chicken buses.
    • Rome2Rio has some bus connections between cities.

Visa

  • As a German, you will buy a CA4 tourist card for $ 10 at the border, which is valid for 90 days. The “Central America-4 Agreement” applies to Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua and only has to be bought once. The limit of 90 days is important. We had an unfriendly passenger in the shuttle and had to wait unnecessarily 1.5 hours due to passport problems at the border.
